Number 2: Christmas Decoration You are about to decorate the house, why not let the children help? Probably it won't go as you had planned or it might not be as pretty as when you do it on your own. However, if you give this idea a chance it can become a great bonding chance for you and your little munchkins. You can talk about the traditions of your family when you were young or maybe explain how certain ornaments ended up being a stable on your Christmas Tree (for us its a Mickey Mouse on a sleigh from Disneyland Paris that my brother gifted to me when I was only 10 years old). Don't forget to google different Christmas words in English and try to find the matching ornament to that. For example look for a reindeer, a Santa, a sleigh or a Christmas bell. Here is an inside look to our Christmas traditions! We all decorated grandma Lou's Christmas tree together. We had a blast and at the end she treated us with some warm hot chocolate with whipped cream. I can't even describe to you how delicious that is. You should give it a go. If you need the recipe just leave a comment below and I can send it to you. Go ahead and give this idea a chance. It can become a great bonding chance for you and your little munchkins! - Cake Baking Adventure in our English ClassSoft & Chewy Chocolate Cookie Cake with vocabulary and grammar practice in English In our English Language class, we recently took a break from our usual lessons to focus on something a bit sweeter: baking a chocolate cookie cake! We devoted a whole lesson to measuring ingredients, mixing the batter, and waiting (im)patiently for the cake to bake. As my student said: Best lesson ever! Can we always do something like that? It was that time of the year when we came across food vocabulary and grammatical structures such as countable and uncountable nouns that usually are about food. I used to just teach the lesson and move on but the last few years I began a new tradition with my students. We bake a cake! Why not right? Not only was it a fun break from our usual routine, but it was also a great way to learn new vocabulary through real practice. From whisking to sifting to folding, we were able to use new words in context and solidify our understanding of them. Overall, it was a great reminder that learning doesn't always have to be serious and that integrating fun activities can be just as effective. Plus, we got to enjoy a delicious treat at the end of it all! Baking a Chocolate Chip Cookie in Class Section 1: Ingredients In case you are baking at home or in class these tips will be super helpful for you to make the whole process easier. You will need: half a cup butter (leave it outside the fridge so it's soft and can easily be whisked) half a cup white sugar (let them measure it on their own) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs (keep a bowl for trash close by) 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 8 tablespoons chocolate chips (you might need more ;) kids are very generous when sprinkling chocolate chips) a pinch of salt (demonstrate what a pinch is) a small pan (you handle the pan and oven just to be safe and that way nothing goes wrong) Section 2: Directions This is what we did in class: First we took the time to practice food and baking vocabulary. We talked about measurements and the language around a recipe. Then I asked my student to read the ingredients and recognize which ingredients were needed from the table and which were not. (TIP: put random ingredients such as vinegar, oil or pepper just to throw them of :p) 3. After that we read the instructions together and explained any unknown words. We even mimed movements such as folding, whisking, pinching before we actually begun baking. 4. It was time to start the process! My student broke the eggs and whisked them together in a bowl. 5. We mixed all dry ingredients in a different bowl and then brought everything together. 6. Mixing all the chocolate chips in was the best part. 7. Putting the pan in the oven was exclusively my job. We discussed this before the process began and agreed on it. At 180 C for 35 minutes. 8. As the cake was baking we practiced countable and uncountable nouns once again. And that was our baking adventure! It was so much fun to put our vocabulary about baking and cooking into practice. We learned how to recognize countable and uncountable nouns as we measured ingredients like sugar and flour. It was amazing to see how everything came together to create a delicious cake. The best part was definitely when we got to eat the cake! It was delicious and made us realize how helpful it can be to have real experience and interaction with the things we learn from the pages of our books. Not only does it make the learning experience more enjoyable, but it also helps us to retain the information better. It was great to see my student engaged and eager to learn more about the process of learning English and baking a cake! For anyone who wants to give it a try, I'll provide the recipe we used here. It's a delicious chocolate chip cake recipe that's easy to follow and yields delicious results. Baking is a wonderful way to learn new things and bond with others, so why not give it a try? Who knows, you might discover a new hobby or talent! And that's all from me... I hope you find these tips useful and interesting. - How to Tell if Your Child's Language Teacher is a Perfect Match (or a Mismatch!)As a parent, you want your child to have the best education possible, and that includes learning a second language. However, not all language teachers are created equal, and finding the right fit for your child can be tricky. Here are five key points to consider when determining if your child's language teacher is the correct fit for them: Your child should be excited before and after an English lesson. The teacher's goal should always be learning in a fun way. 1. Does the teacher make learning fun? One of the most important things to consider is whether the teacher makes learning fun. Children are more likely to retain information and enjoy the learning process if they are engaged and having fun. For example, does the teacher use games, songs, or other interactive activities to keep students interested? Does your child come home excited about what they learned in class? 2. Is the teacher patient and encouraging? Learning a new language can be challenging, especially for young children. A good language teacher should be patient and encouraging, helping students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. For example, does the teacher take the time to help struggling students, or do they get frustrated and give up quickly? Does your child feel comfortable asking the teacher for help? 3. Does the teacher have experience with children? Teaching children requires a different approach than teaching adults. Children need to be engaged and motivated in different ways, and a good language teacher should have experience working with children. For example, does the teacher use age-appropriate materials and activities? Does the teacher use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles? Some children experience learning difficulties such as dyslexia or ADHD, is the teacher experienced with such a thing? Some children experience learning difficulties such as dyslexia or ADHD, is the teacher experienced enough to deal with it? 4.Is the teacher knowledgeable and passionate about the language? A good language teacher should have a strong knowledge of the language they are teaching, as well as a passion for it. This enthusiasm can be contagious and help motivate students to learn more. For example, does the teacher speak the language fluently? Do they have a cultural understanding of the language beyond just grammar and vocabulary? 5. Do you see progress in your child's language skills? Ultimately, the most important indicator of whether a language teacher is the right fit for your child is whether you see progress in your child's language skills. This progress can be measured in different ways, such as improved pronunciation, increased vocabulary, or better comprehension. For example, has your child started using new words or phrases in everyday conversations? Have they shown improvement on language tests or assignments? And that's all from me... Providing children with access to online stories that have an Easter theme can be an engaging and entertaining way to have them practice their language skills while learning more about the holiday. I have here a list of beautifully illustrated stories that your child can read or listen to! Yes! You read that well. These stories are also audiobooks. You can choose to read it and then listen to it. That will be double the practice and so much better for your children's English skills. And the best part? - "Game On!" How to Practice English While You Drivepart of the 'Learning Easier' series. Are you looking for ways to practice your English in the car with your kids or partner? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here are five fun activities to help you and your family learn English while having fun and making the most of your car time. Before we start with our fabulous list don't forget to register in my email list so you never miss any new posts coming from me. 1. 'I spy with my little eye' game 'I Spy with My Little Eye' is a classic car game that can help you and your children strengthen your English vocabulary. You can also pass the time on a long drive. To play, one person should be the 'spy', and the other players should guess what the spy is looking for. The spy can look out the window and pick an object that they see, then give a clue about the object, such as its color, shape, size, or location. The other players then guess what the object is. If a player guesses correctly, they become the new spy and choose the next object. This game can be a fun and creative way to pass the time and practice all the words that you have learned in English. You even might learn some new ones. 2. Word Chain Word chain is a fun game that can be played with friends and family of all ages. The objective of the game is to create a chain of related words, in which each word begins with the last letter of the previous word. To play, each person takes a turn saying a word that is related to the previous word. This can be anything from animals to objects to verbs, as long as each word starts with the last letter of the previous. The game continues until there are no more words to be added. To make it more challenging, you can set a time limit for each person to come up with the next word or impose a rule that each word must start with a certain letter. Have fun and enjoy creating an interesting word chain while in the car. Here is an example of a word chain: 'car, rino, octopus, stairs, space, Easter ...' To make it more challenging, you can set a time limit for each person to come up with the next word. 3. Listen to English Radio Listening to English radio is a great way to practice your English. You can find English-language radio stations in most areas, or you can listen to online radio stations. This is a great way to hear new words and practice pronunciation. 4. Tell Stories Storytelling is a great way to practice your English. You can tell stories that are based on your own experiences or you can make up stories together. This is a great way to use your imagination and practice your English at the same time. If your English level is not good you can make up short silly stories with the words you know. Sometimes they won't even make sense but they will be funny. Here is an example of a beginner telling a story: 'There is a dog. The dog is small. It is alone in the house. The weather is stormy. The dog is scared. Boom. Thunder. Oh uh! The dog fainted.' 5. Sing Along Singing along to your favorite songs is a great way to practice your English. It’s also a lot of fun! Pick some songs that you all know and sing along together. This is a great way to practice pronunciation and vocabulary in the car. My personal favourite songs are Disney songs such as 'Frozen' and 'Moana' which children are already familiar with and it so much easier for them to learn since they love them already. You can pick any song you want and trust me, it will make a huge difference to yours and your children's fluency.
